Liberty University Doctoral Information
In April 2010, Liberty University – the world’s largest Christian university – enrolled its 50,000th online student. Liberty University is a Virginia-based Baptist college offering both online and on-campus learning. The private school, which was founded by evangelist Jerry Falwell in 1971, aims to provide both academic and spiritual enrichment to its undergraduate and graduate students. On-campus students attend convocation three times a week, adhere to a modest dress code, and agree to abide by behavioral standards.
Liberty University delivers five online doctoral programs. These include the Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, the PhD in Professional Counseling, and three more religion-centered degrees: the Doctor of Ministry, the PhD in Theology and Apologetics, and the PhD in Pastoral Counseling. Each program entails writing a dissertation and may involve an internship. Students may transfer up to 39 credits from other accredited universities. Credit hours at Liberty University cost about $430 each.
Liberty is regionally accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Specific programs at Liberty have additional endorsements. For example, in 2010 the Liberty University School of Education became fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
